I just got the new PT disc (due for release either 4/26 or 5/3) and it will be a must for all PT fans. It's the same band with Gavin Harrison on drums and there'e even a guest appearance by Adrian Belew.

Didn't download, the record company sent it. I'll be transcribing bits of it for Drum!
This more closely resembles Gavin's playing in the band live. Lots of double bass embellishments and licks. If you're unfamiliar with Porcupine Tree - try to imagine if Radiohead and Tool had a baby ....
I've seen em live and have Gavin's DVD... great band, Blackfield is cool too. I'm looking forward to Gavin on this one! Anything clever on this like "The Sound of Muzak"? Man that was a killer groove!
There's lots of great fills and good grooves. There's also some very simple playing, and lots of odd times, etc. I haven't heard it all yet - it just arrived today.
I hope they tour through Chicago again. One of the last times, they played Martyr's, I met Gavin, gave him one of the Drum Pad's cards, and then he dropped by the shop the next day and hung out for a few hours. Very nice guy, and a killer player.
Great books and vid, but definitely heavy stuff!

Gavin is great and very musical BUT the only problem is that his playing is super tame and laid back, no intensity. Very methodical too... but still tastey. He has some amazing concepts in his DVD, but you have to admit that is it super dry, like reading an old math or science text book. I'm just wondering if you have noticed this too?
I'm betting you haven't seen him live. He has control, accuracy, etc., and I know what you mean from his playing on his Rhythmic Visions DVD, but he plays with a lot more fire live.

Had to revive this post, now that the disc should be out everywhere. Upon first listen, some tunes seemed stale, and almost forced, but after having lived with it for a few days, I can't get it out of my head!!! I've had it queued up on the iPod, had the Stereo disc in the truck and the DTS disc in the DVD player for the last 3 days and can't stop listening to it!!
The Lazarus CD Single has two additional non-album tracks that I hear are killer as well... I'll probably be picking that up ASAP....
All in all, I say if you pick this disc up and are initially somewhat let down, give it time, it'll grow on you like crazy..... In Absentia is a tough disc to follow up!!
